Greenburgh Academy students kicked off the month of October by gathering together, united in a mission to end bullying. For anyone who doesn't know, October is officially Bully Awareness Month. In classes across the school, students were prompted with lessons and questions about bullying. How can people identify bullying? What are the dangers of bullying? What can be done to stop bullying? And how to help those who have bullied others, and those who have been bullied. These four guiding questions were the core learning goals for the students to open up and discuss throughout the month. The lessons were designed in Ms. Phillips and Mr. Federice health classes. Students in Mr. Brennan's civics classes held conversations about fairness and equity, with the question of restorative justice. A few ELA classes began reading Speak as the core text during the month of October, a fictional novel about a girl being bullied during her freshman year of high school. The project culminated in a poster contest where students created presentations and posters to show what they learned about how to end bullying. Mrs. Fuentes, Mr. Johnson, and Ms. Binns organized the poster contest, in which there were over 30 entries this year. Although many of the students handed in wonderful projects, the winning poster was created by Greenburgh Academy senior, Devon McIntosh.
Thank you to all who participated, and congratulations.
